The United States of America has declared its intention to pursue a trade agreement with the United Kingdom after Brexit, with a significant investment that could revolutionize the food industry. They have recognized Brexit as an “opportunity” to reassess previous trade agreements with the UK, and negotiations will begin with the food industry.
However, the prospect of a trade deal remains divisive in the United Kingdom, particularly among farmers, agricultural representatives, and advocacy groups from the food and beverage industry.
US Trade Agreement
President Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to establish a trade agreement as soon as possible following the UK’s departure from the European Union, which is still scheduled for the end of this month, although a delay is becoming increasingly likely.
The United States Trade Representative’s Office has specified that the food market is a priority for the trade deal, outlining an 18-page list of demands that explicitly requests access to central UK markets.
Central to their policy is the reduction of tariffs between the USA and the United Kingdom, a measure that President Trump is advocating for his own country in negotiations with China. Additionally, the document mentions the agricultural industry, stating a desire to “break down barriers” to the market and achieve “comprehensive market access.”
Farmers Urge Caution
However, farmers are warning that this trade agreement could have disastrous consequences for the food industry in the United Kingdom.
